Technically this specification is deprecated by IETF in favor of TLS. It was originally developed by Netscape for their infamous web browser, but is still ocassionally heard today to refer to TLS. The last SSL spec (3.0) was born in 1996 and was followed by TLS 1.0 in 1999.
